Rene Matić, a Central Saint Martins fine art student and upcoming artist, has used art to explore her identity as an LGBTQ+ woman of colour since an early age.
Known for using her own experiences of racism and homophobia – both positive and negative - as an inspiration for her art, Matić tells her story through various mediums, including self-portrait, film and sculpture. Citing Nina Simone as a main influence, the 20 year old’s work often draws on popular culture and features emotionally charged political messages. She was recently featured in a photoshoot with Dazed and Gucci, and is working with the Italian fashion house to highlight issues raised in her artwork.
